GRAFFITI CHANGED MY LIFE

Mi chiamo Cristian Bovo sono nato a Padova nel 1974, nel 1992 ho sentito la necessità di lasciare un segno: ho scelto un nome e ho iniziato a scriverlo sui muri della mia città.

Questo nome è Joys.

Il mio inizio in questa avventura è molto simile a quello di altri che come me sono stati attratti dal writing, con il passare del tempo ho preso coscienza della necessità di un’evoluzione: non solo scrivere il mio nome, ma anche poterlo sviluppare su se stesso e su qualsiasi cosa.

Le opere di oggi, sono frutto di 30 anni di studio delle lettere; ho iniziato scrivendo il mio nome in modo semplice partendo dai font classici, in seguito ho sempre cercato di aggiungere al io nome qualcosa di nuovo, innovativo ed originale: è un percorso lento ma continuo.

Il mio studio si sviluppa soprattutto linearmente secondo un percorso orizzontale, aggiungendo passaggi e livelli, occupando sempre più tutti gli spazi vuoti. L’idea era di arrivare ad un corpo compatto ed intrecciatissimo, apparentemente astratto e senza significato, ma dove il nome fosse comunque in primo piano.

Ho continuato ad esasperare le lettere seguendo forme circolari o cambi di prospettiva, modificando così dinamiche e movimento. Le lettere devono adattarsi al muro seguendo la sua conformazione utilizzando i suoi particolari, fondendo il tutto in un disegno/installazione.

Nel corso degli anni ho creato, senza premeditarlo troppo, una metrica, una ritmica nel costruire le mie lettere-forme, che col passare del tempo è diventata sempre più rigorosa ma allo stesso tempo si è snellita, semplificata e sintetizzata.

Nel mio percorso è stato fondamentale scrivere Joys sui vagoni dei treni. La mia esperienza personale risale a una ventina di anni fa: “l’età dell’oro”. Le mie forme si adattavano perfettamente allo spazio sotto alle finestre dei vagoni e ciò ha favorito l’evoluzione del mio lettering. Questo è stato senza dubbio un periodo stimolante ed istintivo che ha permesso di sviluppare la mia cifra stilistica e di prenderne sempre più coscienza.

Adesso mi sento un po’ un vecchietto seduto sulla sedia con la coperta sulle gambe, mentre ricorda gli anni migliori; e i ricordi sono molti, fatti di pezzi belli e pezzi brutti, amicizie e scazzi, divertimento e fughe. Ricordo quando sul Ponte della Libertà a Venezia, siamo stati affiancati da un treno dipinto da me la sera prima; credo che non ci sia gratitudine migliore che vedere il proprio nome passarti davanti.

Parallelamente ai disegni su strada e su treno, a fine anni ‘90, ho cominciato a sentire l’esigenza di espandere la visione su superfici e materiali che potessero ampliare i confini del mio lavoro. Il passaggio dal writing alla scultura è una scelta dettata dalla necessità di avere per le mani non solo una fotografia come nei graffiti ma qualcosa di vero e palpabile. I disegni che faccio su muro o altri supporti non sono per sempre, sono effimeri: avevo ed ho bisogno di ottenere qualcosa che rimanga. Un esperimento che ha preso consistenza ed importanza anche nei graffiti, trasferendo ispirazioni da una cosa all’altra e vice versa. Ci sono sculture che sono progettate solo sulle lettere, un oggetto statico e indifferente al mondo circostante, altre sono in simbiosi con esso. Lo studio del mio stile si è rivolto anche su nuove tipologie di materiali che vanno dal legno al ferro, dal plexiglass al vetro.

L’applicazione di questo nuovo approccio si è evoluto fino a diventare funzionale all’ambiente vissuto, trasferendo il pattern su oggetti e ambienti che fanno parte del quotidiano.

ASTRATTISMO

Oggi parte dei miei lavori hanno abbandonato le “regole delle lettere” seguono semplicemente le forme e come queste sono in relazione con lo spazio. Il nome è stato semplificato nella sua essenza, nel segno, nella cifra stilistica che lo caratterizza. Un processo di smontaggio e ricostruzione, tra forma organica e pattern digitale, diventando nello stesso tempo sia grafici che scultorei.

My name is Cristian Bovo and I was born in Padova in 1974. In 1992 I felt the need to leave a mark: I chose a name and started writing it on the walls of my city.

My beginning in this adventure is very similar to that of others who, like me, have been attracted to writing. With the passing of time I became aware of the need for an evolution: not only to write my name, but also to be able to develop it on myself and on anything.

The works of today are the result of 30 years of study of letters. I started writing my name in a simple way starting from the classic fonts, then I always tried to add to my name something new, innovative and original: it is a slow but continuous journey. My studio develops mainly linearly according to a horizontal path, adding passages and levels, occupying more and more all the empty spaces. The idea was to arrive at a compact and interwoven body, apparently abstract and without meaning, but where the name was nevertheless in the foreground.

I continued to exaggerate the letters by following circular shapes or changes in perspective, thus modifying dynamics and movement. The letters must adapt to the wall following its conformation using its details, merging everything into a design/installation.

Over the years I have created, without premeditating it too much, a metric, a rhythm in the construction of my letters-forms, which over time has become increasingly rigorous but at the same time has become streamlined, simplified and synthesized.

LIFE IS A TRAIN

In my journey it was essential to write Joys on train cars. My personal experience goes back about twenty years: the "golden age". My shapes were perfectly suited to the space under the windows of the train cars and this favored the evolution of my lettering. This was undoubtedly a stimulating and instinctive period that allowed me to develop my style and become more and more aware of it.

Now I feel a bit like an old man sitting on a chair with a blanket on his legs, remembering the best years; and the memories are many, made up of good and bad pieces, friendships and disagreements, fun and escapes. I remember when on the Ponte della Libertà in Venice, we were next to a train painted by me the night before; I believe there is no better satisfaction than to see your name pass you in front of you.

Parallel to the drawings on the street and on trains, at the end of the '90s, I began to feel the need to expand my vision on surfaces and materials that could expand the boundaries of my work. The transition from writing to sculpture is a choice dictated by the need to have in my hands not only a photograph as in graffiti but something real and palpable. The drawings that I make on walls or other supports are not forever, they are ephemeral: I needed to obtain something that remains. An experiment that has taken consistency and importance even in graffiti, transferring inspirations from one thing to another and vice versa. There are sculptures that are designed only on the letters, a static object indifferent to the surrounding world, others are in symbiosis with it. The study of my style has also turned to new types of materials ranging from wood to iron, from plexiglass to glass.

The application of this new approach has evolved to become functional to the lived environment, transferring the pattern on objects and environments that are part of everyday life.

ABSTRACTISM

Today some of my works have abandoned the "rules of letters" ; they simply follow the forms and how they relate to space. The name has been simplified in its essence, in the sign, in the stylistic code that characterizes it. A process of disassembly and reconstruction, between organic form and digital pattern, becoming at the same time both graphic and sculptural.
